Following Virat Kohli’s retirement, Shubman Gill’s batting position is anticipated to shift to number four. Consequently, a replacement is needed for the number three spot. Although Karun Nair is a strong contender, Harbhajan Singh has suggested an alternative candidate.

New Delhi: This five-match Test series against England will be the beginning of the World Test Championship 2025-27 campaign by India. The team will be very different after the retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. New Captain Shubman Gill is likely to come in at number four. Karun Nair, having scored runs in the warm-up games against the England Lions, is a possibility at number three, although Harbhajan Singh has indicated otherwise.
Harbhajan Singh wants Sai Sudharsan to be promoted to bat at number three in an interview with IANS, explaining that he is a left-handed batsman and is in tremendous form recently, having won the Orange Cap in IPL 2025.
“In my opinion, Sai Sudharsan should play at No.3. He’s a left-hander, in top form, and just came off a very impressive IPL. His technique is sound, and I believe he could be the solution at that position,” Harbhajan said.
Harbhajan Singh showed great concern with the big challenge that the England tour has to offer to the newly appointed captain Shubman Gill, especially due to the lack of experienced players in the team.
“Gill is a new captain, and the team is quite young — there’s no Rohit, Virat, Pujara, or even Ajinkya Rahane. It’s going to be challenging, but I expect our youngsters to rise to the occasion and perform well,” the former India spinner added.
