New Delhi: Punjab Kings not only won an important match by defeating Mumbai Indians by 7 wickets in IPL 2025, but also made it to the playoffs for the first time since 2014. This victory was historic for Punjab, as the team had been lagging behind in the playoff race for a long time. At the same time, this defeat was disappointing for Mumbai Indians in many ways. They have never won the IPL trophy from third or fourth place so far, and their poor record in Jaipur also remained.

Mumbai Indians, who came to bat first after losing the toss, scored 184/7 in 20 overs. Wicketkeeper batsman Ryan Rickelton gave a quick start and scored 27 runs in 20 balls. Rohit Sharma (24) and Suryakumar Yadav (57) tried to handle the innings, but no one could play a long innings. Suryakumar definitely scored 57 runs in 39 balls with the help of 5 fours and 2 sixes and took the team to a respectable score.

On the other hand, the bowlers performed accurately from Punjab’s side. Arshdeep Singh took 2 wickets for 28 runs in 4 overs, while Marco Jansen and Vijaykumar Vaishnav also got two wickets each. Harpreet Brar took the big wicket of Rohit Sharma.

Priyansh Arya and Inglis gave an easy win

Chasing the target of 185 runs, Punjab Kings started aggressively. Young batsman Priyansh Arya played in a bang and scored 62 runs in 35 balls. He hit 9 fours and 2 sixes in his innings and did not give any chance to the Mumbai bowlers. Although Prabsimran Singh (13) was dismissed early, England wicketkeeper batsman Josh Inglis did wonders after his dismissal.

Inglis scored 73 runs in just 42 balls, including 9 fours and 3 sixes. He, along with captain Shreyas Iyer (26 *), brought the team to the threshold of victory. Punjab won the match by scoring 187 runs in just 18.3 overs.

Mumbai’s bowling was not impressive in this match. Jasprit Bumrah certainly bowled economically, giving only 23 runs in 4 overs and taking one wicket, but the rest of the bowlers proved to be very expensive. Mitchell Santner got two wickets, but he also gave runs at an economy of more than 10 runs per over.

New enthusiasm in the playoffs, old history broken

With this win, Punjab Kings have made it to the IPL 2025 playoffs and that too in a spectacular manner. For the first time since 2014, the team has entered the top-4, which will make their fans very happy. At the same time, another season of Mumbai Indians ended outside the top-2, and history shows that they have never been able to win the trophy from this position.

Now Punjab looks full of confidence and their performance shows that they can be one of the strong contenders for the trophy this time.
