New Delhi: Rachin Ravindra made an impressive return from injury and achieved a significant milestone during New Zealand’s second game in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against Bangladesh on Monday, February 24, at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, by scoring a memorable century.

After being sidelined from New Zealand’s last three games, including the tournament’s first match against Pakistan, due to an unusual injury sustained while fielding in the initial game of the tri-series in Lahore against the Pakistani team earlier this month.

Rachin took Daryl Mitchell’s place in the starting lineup, as Mitchell was sidelined by an illness. The 25-year-old came in to bat at the fourth position after the Black Caps got off to a poor beginning in their run-chase, with Will Young and Kane Williamson both scoring in single digits.

Rachin played a crucial role in New Zealand’s pursuit by forming a strong 57-run partnership for the third wicket alongside Devon Conway. Subsequently, Tom Latham and the left-handed batsman collaborated to establish a significant 129-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Ravindra was dismissed after making a knock of 112 in just 105 balls while Latham made a 76-ball 55 to set the stage for a comfortable victory for the Black Caps which will ensure they qualify for the semi-finals alongside India.

Ravindra made history by becoming the first player ever to score a century on debut in both the Cricket World Cup and the Champions Trophy. He achieved this milestone by scoring a century against England during the opening match of the 2023 World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, marking his first appearance in this prestigious ODI tournament.

In the history of cricket, 19 players have achieved the feat of scoring a century in their first ODI World Cup match, while 15 players have done so in their initial Champions Trophy appearance. Rachin is the only player to appear on both lists.

Rachin achieved his fourth century in One Day International (ODI) cricket within only 30 innings, with all four centuries occurring during ICC events. The standout batsman scored three centuries in the 2023 Cricket World Cup, reaching the three-figure milestone against Australia in Dharamshala and Pakistan in Bengaluru.

Rachin has achieved the record for the most centuries by a New Zealand player in ICC tournaments, surpassing the previous record held by Kane Williamson and Nathan Astle, who each had three centuries.

Rachin has become the second-fastest player in the history of ICC events to achieve four centuries, following India’s Shikhar Dhawan, who holds the record with 11. Additionally, at the age of 25, Rachin has surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most centuries in international competitions.

Rachin’s remarkable performance in the 2023 Cricket World Cup established him as the tournament debutant with the highest number of runs, totaling 578 runs over 10 innings.
