Ravi Shastri was visibly sad that Virat Kohli quit playing in Test so abruptly, saying he should have been handled better.

New Delhi: Ravi Shastri expressed sadness regarding Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket. Shastri, Kohli’s former coach during a period of significant success, believes Kohli’s departure could have been handled with more consideration. Kohli, who debuted in 2011, amassed 9,230 Test runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries, placing him fourth on India’s all-time Test run-scorers list. His retirement was announced before the England tour.
“Virat has announced his retirement from Test matches, which is sad, you know, because he’s a great player. A great player. It’s only when you go that people truly realise how big a player you were. Stats don’t do justice — it’s about the way he carried himself, especially as an ambassador for Test match cricket, particularly overseas. The way he played at Lord’s, and how his team turned things around — it was unreal. And I’m glad I was a part of it,” Shastri said this while speaking on Sony Sports Network’s program ‘Bharat Tum Chale Chalo: Kahani 21-22 Ki’.
“I feel sad that he’s gone the way he has — suddenly. I think it could have been handled better, maybe with more communication. If I had anything to do with it, I would’ve made him captain straight after Australia,” he added.
As a captain of the Indian Test team, Virat Kohli has the highest number of victories (40 out of 68 matches). His tenure as captain was marked by the terrific pace bowling attack, emphasis on fitness of the players and the aggressive approach to play which made India a top Test team in different playing conditions.
