Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt recalls his toughest fight with lung cancer during the COVID-19 lockdown, revealing how Rakesh Roshan stepped in to help when he couldn’t travel to the US for treatment.

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has always lived a life full of highs and lows. From controversies to jail time, his personal journey has never been easy. But among all his struggles, his biggest challenge came when he was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2020, at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a recent podcast, the actor recalled those heartbreaking days and shared how the diagnosis left him shaken. “It was lockdown, I was climbing the stairs when I felt breathless. Even after a bath, I couldn’t breathe properly. I called the doctor, and after tests, they found fluid in my lungs. Everyone thought it was TB, but it turned out to be cancer. It was shocking. I got angry, and when my sister came, I told her I had cancer. I cried for two to three hours, not for myself but worrying about my family,” he said.
Why couldn’t he go abroad for treatment?
At that time, the whole world was battling the deadly coronavirus. Travel restrictions were strict, and Sanjay could not get a US visa for his treatment. “I first thought of going to the US, but the visa didn’t work out. Then Rakesh Roshan helped me,” he revealed.
Roshan connected him with doctors and guided him through the treatment process in India and Dubai. Dutt described how the actor-filmmaker’s support became a turning point in his cancer journey.
How did he face chemotherapy?
Sharing more details, Sanjay revealed how doctors tried to prepare him for the painful side effects. “Rakesh Roshan suggested a doctor to me. He told me, ‘Your hair will fall, you will vomit.’ I told the doctor nothing will happen to me. I underwent chemotherapy and sat on my bike for an hour after it. I did this after every chemo session. Later, I even started playing badminton for 2-3 hours a day.”
His determination and positivity helped him fight back. Today, he has emerged stronger and continues to entertain fans with powerful performances.
