This day is build upto by a special days of the Valentine’s where each topical day is gesture of love. From roses to hugs, chocolates and kisses. The origins can be traced back to a  Roman saint from the yore whose letter led to establishment of the celebration. Who knew a Roman love would become a global day of romance and cherishing bonds you love.

Story Behind Valentine’s Day

Apart from St Valentines sacrifice, some people also talk about the contribution of poets like Geoffrey Chauce The modern celebration of Valentine’s Day began in the 14th century when it became associated with romantic love. This evolution was influenced by the writings of poets like Geoffrey Chaucer, who linked the day to the mating season of birds, suggesting a time for love and courtship. By the 18th century, it became customary for people to exchange handwritten notes and gifts, further solidifying its association with romance.

Who Was St. Valentine?

Saint Valentine, a figure shrouded in mystery, is the namesake of this romantic holiday. If lores are to belived, he was a Christian priest in Rome during the  time when Emperor Claudius II had banned marriages for young men, believing single men made better soldiers. Valentine defied this decree by continuing to perform marriages for couples in secret.

His actions eventually led to his arrest and subsequent execution. According to legend, while imprisoned, Valentine is said to have healed the jailer’s blind daughter, and before his death, he sent her a note signed “Your Valentine,” a phrase that endures to this day.

Different accounts and legends exist regarding St. Valentine, with some attributing his story to multiple martyrs named Valentine. His feast day was established on February 14th, commemorating his sacrifice and commitment to love. Over the centuries, St. Valentine has come to symbolise romantic love, with his legacy inspiring countless stories, poems, and traditions surrounding the celebration of affection.

Valentine’s Day is a blend of historical significance and modern celebration, rooted in the themes of love. We come a long way from handwritten notes to dating ap pick up lines. Grand gestures or  this day serves as a reminder to cherish those we hold dear.
