This man from Kolkata is a name unto himself. Coming from a middle-class Bengali family, his career choices faced opposition from his family. Financial problems further hindered his ability to pursue his dreams at the time. However, that did not stop him from dreaming big. After his father’s death, he faced immense societal pressure. At just 15 years old, life’s circumstances forced him to run away to Goa, where he worked as a waiter and washed dishes to make a living.

We are talking about world famous Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee. He wanted to study at NIFT, but his parents refused to fund his admission. He didn’t let the disapproval come his way of becoming a designer, and to buy the application form, he sold off his books. He worked hard to pay for his education.

He graduated from the National Institute of Fashion Technology in 1999. With the help of his sister and a loan of Rs 20,000, Sabyasachi launched his own label. This marked the beginning of India’s first global fashion brand, admired not only in neighboring countries like Pakistan but also by people from the UAE, Italy, and Dubai, eager to experience his creations firsthand.

How Sabyasachi became a brand?

In 2002, Sabyasachi began building his brand with just three employees who worked tirelessly on his debut collection, Kashgar Bazaar. Inspired by his mother’s artistry, the collection was showcased at Lakme Fashion Week and received widespread appreciation. This success marked the turning point in his journey. Soon after, he won his first international honor, the Grand Winner Award at the Mercedes-Benz New Asia Fashion Week in Singapore.

Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s label is now worth…

Sabyasachi label has made him one of the most loved bridal designers in India. Rani Mukerji was the first Bollywood bride to wear his designs, and he was the only guest at her secret wedding with Aditya Chopra. Over the years, many actresses, including Anushka Sharma, Deepika Padukone, and Alia Bhatt, have chosen his collections for their weddings.
