Ahmedabad:  A massive sinkhole, resembling a meteor crater, was formed when a section of the road collapsed during heavy rainfall in Shela, Ahmedabad Smart City. A visual circulating on social media shows the middle of a road caving in, with water flowing into a large cavity. Meanwhile, the rainwater gathered in the underpass near Pathik Ashram was pumped out with the help of a water bowser. Waterlogging has been reported in several places in the Ahmedabad city following heavy rainfall.

Orange Alert For 5 Districts

In its weather bulletin on June 30, the weather department forecast rainfall in all parts of Gujarat for the next five days and sounded an orange alert for five districts of the state on Sunday.

“Isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Saurashtra & Kutch on 01st July; Gujarat Region during 02nd -04th July; Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra on 02nd & 04th July; Konkan & Goa on 02nd & 03rd July; Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe & South Interior Karnataka on 30th June & 01st July; Lakshadweep, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana on 30th June and Coastal Karnataka during 30th June-03rd July,” the India Meteorological Department in its press release said.

“Isolated very heavy rainfall very likely over Saurashtra & Kutch on 30th June; Gujarat Region, Madhya Maharashtra on 30th June & 01st July; Konkan & Goa on 30th June, 01st & 04 th July,” IMD further said.

While speaking to news agency ANI, IMD Scientist Pradeep Sharma said, “There will be rains in all parts of Gujarat in the next 5 days. A warning for very heavy rain is issued for Saurashtra and Kutch for today. An orange alert has been issued for Bharuch, Surat, Navsari, Valsad and Dadra Nagar Haveli.”

Meanwhile, a day after the canopy collapsed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, in which one person was killed and eight others were injured, the canopy collapsed at the passenger pickup and drop area of Rajkot airport on Saturday.

According to Ministry of Civil Aviation sources, the canopy broke during maintenance work to push out water accumulated in the canopy. No one was injured in the incident, and a detailed report has been sought. Repair work is underway. Sharing a post on X, Rajkot International Airport wrote, “At around 11:40 AM, it was noticed that water was accumulating in the canopy of the city side area of ​​the Gai Ki Terminal building. As soon as this was noticed, the civil section was immediately informed and the place was cordoned off.”

“At around 11.55 AM, due to the heavy rains, water accumulated and the canopy fabric got torn and fell down.
There was no loss of life of any kind during the incident. The damaged canopy is being removed by the airport civil team,” the post further reads.
