New Delhi: Abhishek Sharma dazzled at the Wankhede Stadium during the 5th T20I against England, setting a new record for India’s highest individual score with an explosive 135 runs off just 54 balls. He broke Shubman Gill’s previous record of 126* against New Zealand in Ahmedabad in 2023. Abhishek’s remarkable innings featured 7 boundaries and 13 sixes, before Adil Rashid dismissed him in the 18th over.

Earlier, Abhishek achieved the second-fastest century for India, reaching the milestone in just 37 balls. After India was put to bat, he took charge following the dismissal of his partner Sanju Samson. Abhishek punished Jofra Archer for a boundary and two sixes in the third over and then targeted Mark Wood and Jamie Overton. His aggression was evident as he blasted two consecutive sixes off Overton in the fifth over to bring up his fifty.

Abhishek’s century was his second for India in just 16 innings, with his total runs surpassing 500 at an incredible strike rate of over 190. The record for the fastest century in T20I cricket still belongs to former India captain Rohit Sharma, who scored a century off 35 balls against Sri Lanka in 2017.

In late 2024, Abhishek set a new T20 record for the joint-fastest century by an Indian, reaching the milestone in just 28 balls while playing for Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Additionally, India registered their highest-ever Powerplay score in T20Is, finishing at 95/1 after six overs, surpassing the previous record of 82, which had been set twice in 2021 and 2024.
