Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will look to continue their winning run when they go up against five-time former winners Mumbai Indians in match no. 12 of the IPL 2025 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday. KKR have bounced back after losing their first match to RCB, having trounced Rajasthan Royals away from home in Guwahati last week.

True to their familiar IPL history, Mumbai Indians have stumbled out of the gates once again – losing both their opening match to CSK and Gujarat Titans. Slow starts are nothing new for MI but the five-time champions are notorious for bouncing back late in the season to go all the way. To spark a revival this time, they’ll need sharper execution with the ball and greater consistency from the batters—especially with no designated finisher in the lower order.

Rohit Sharma’s form has been inconsistent, while Ryan Rickelton, in his debut IPL campaign, is still adjusting to Indian conditions despite showing flashes of promise. Rohit, in particular, has managed just two single-digit scores so far, including a duck.

Suryakumar Yadav’s 48 against Gujarat Titans was a positive sign, though it wasn’t quite the explosive knock fans expect from the T20I skipper. Mumbai’s constant chopping and changing have hampered their rhythm, and the lack of a powerful finisher like Tim David from previous seasons continues to be felt.

That leaves Tilak Varma and Suryakumar as MI’s most dependable options with the bat. Their form will be crucial if Mumbai hopes to build momentum. Hardik Pandya returns to the Wankhede Stadium buoyed by recent personal successes, though he may still face a charged crowd after taking over the captaincy from Rohit last season.

As for KKR, they’ll look to carry the momentum from their emphatic win over Rajasthan Royals, following an opening loss to RCB. Under Ajinkya Rahane’s leadership, the squad has depth and firepower. However, Moeen Ali opening in the absence of Sunil Narine raised a few eyebrows, especially alongside Quinton de Kock.

With a solid middle order featuring Rahane, Venkatesh Iyer, and young Angkrish Raghuvanshi, and the proven finishing duo of Rinku Singh and Andre Russell, KKR remain dangerous. Their balanced bowling attack further strengthens their case as they head into this clash.
