New Delhi: Ex-England cricketer Michael Vaughan on Sunday voiced his support for Virat Kohli to take charge of the Indian team in the forthcoming Test series against England. He also suggested that Shubman Gill could serve as the deputy for the series. Following Rohit Sharma’s recent retirement from the longest format earlier this week, India now face the task of appointing a new Test leader for the upcoming tour.

“If I was India I would give the captaincy to Virat for the Test series in England .. Shubman Gill can be his VC for the tour,” Vaughan posted on X.

On Friday, The Indian Express revealed that Virat Kohli has informed the BCCI of his intention to step away from Test cricket. However, senior board members have urged him to rethink his decision and not rush into retirement.

“He has made up his mind and has informed the board that he is moving on from Test cricket. The BCCI has urged him to rethink as the crucial England tour is coming up. He is yet to revert on the request,” sources told the Indian Express newspaper.

Virat Kohli’s move follows closely after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket earlier this week. The Indian selection committee is expected to convene soon to finalize the squad for the upcoming five-match Test series in England, scheduled for next month.
