Legendary India National Cricket Team batter Sunil Gavaskar has slammed India’s decision to send Axar Patel ahead of Dinesh Karthik in the batting order in the first T20I of the three-match T20I series against Aaron Finch’s Australia National Cricket Team at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali, Chandigarh on Tuesday, September 20, where India lost by 4 wickets.
Veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik, who was picked over young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant in the playing XI for the first T20I against Australia, was able to score just 6 runs in the match.
Notably, Axar Patel came out to bat in the 14th over after the dismissal of Suryakumar Yadav ahead of Karthik and this move of the Indian team management was heavily criticised.
Meanwhile, Gavaskar said that if the team management thinks Karthik is a better batter than Axar Patel he should walk in to bat even if it is the 12th or 13th over.
“If you think that he (Karthik) is a better batsman than Axar Patel, then he should come into bat even if it is the 12th or 13th over. All this thing about coming in only for the last 3-4 overs is not the kind of thing that should be looked at. We should not be going by theory,” he said on Sports Today.
India needs to make sure that they don’t fall into the trap of theories – Sunil Gavaskar
Gavaskar further said that the India National Cricket Team will have to make sure that they don’t fall into the trap of theories if they want to succeed.
“If you see how English cricket has changed by not going by theory, they are now playing very free cricket. They are not going by theory that this could happen only if this happens. Look at the difference in their cricket and the difference in their results. India needs to make sure that they don’t fall into the trap of theories. They have got to look at the practicality of the situation at hand and take decisions accordingly,” mentioned Gavaskar.
