New Delhi: MI Cape Town clinched their first Betway SA20 title, thanks to a brilliant display by Kagiso Rabada, who led the charge with 4/25, as they restricted Sunrisers Eastern Cape to just 105 in reply to their 181/8. Rabada’s performance was the highlight of the match, with his crucial wickets and a stunning diving catch to dismiss Sunrisers captain Aiden Markram at a pivotal moment.
Rabada was well-supported by spin duo George Linde (2/20) and Rashid Khan (1/19), who helped keep Sunrisers in check. After winning the toss and opting to bat, MI Cape Town got off to a blazing start, with Ryan Rickelton blasting 33 off 15 balls (1×4, 4×6), propelling them to 51 within five overs. However, after Rickelton’s dismissal by Craig Overton, and Reeza Hendricks’ quick exit, MI Cape Town finished the Powerplay at 52/2, the highest total conceded by Sunrisers in the competition.
Rickelton also surpassed Heinrich Klaasen as the all-time leading run-scorer in Betway SA20 history with 1012 runs. Despite losing wickets, MI Cape Town regained momentum through partnerships, with Dewald Brevis (38 off 18) and Connor Esterhuizen (39 off 26) playing key roles in reaching a competitive total.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape, needing a solid start, struggled in the Powerplay, losing David Bedingham and Jordan Hermann for a mere eight runs. A 57-run partnership between Abell and Tony de Zorzi helped stabilize the innings, but their dismissals, along with Markram’s fall, left Sunrisers reeling. With Rabada sealing the win, MI Cape Town triumphed, securing their first SA20 title and ending Sunrisers’ hopes of a third consecutive crown.
