Sachin Tendulkar made his India debut at the age of 16 years and 205 days. While many believe he holds the record as the youngest cricketer to play for Team India, that’s not the case. Sachin is, in fact, the youngest male cricketer to represent India in international cricket.
The overall record for the youngest cricketer to debut for India is held by Shafali Verma. She made history in 2019 when she debuted in T20I cricket against South Africa at the age of 15 years and 239 days. In November 2019, Shafali Verma made another record by becoming the youngest half-centurion for India. At just 15 years and 285 days old, she scored a half-century against the West Indies in St Lucia. Her remarkable performances contributed to India reaching the final of the 2020 T20 World Cup.
Before Shafali Verma, Shamila Chakraborty held the record for being the youngest Indian debutant. She made her Test debut at the age of 15 years and 241 days against the West Indies in 1976. Shafali surpassed her by just two days when she made her debut for India 43 years later.
Rajani Venugopal is the second-youngest debutant for India, making her Test debut at 15 years and 283 days old against New Zealand in 1985. Just eight days later, she made her ODI debut against the same team in Patna, becoming India’s youngest ODI debutant.
In men’s cricket, Sachin Tendulkar holds the record as India’s youngest Test and ODI debutant. He made his ODI debut at the age of 16 years and 238 days. The ICC Hall of Famer went on to play 200 Tests, 463 ODIs, and one T20I. Known for being the only player to score 100 international centuries, Sachin holds the records for the most runs and the most appearances in international cricket.
