2024 World Chess Champion Gukesh, who will be awarded Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna from next year.
New Delhi: R Ashwin had an emotional encounter with D. Gukesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Ashwin, who has rejoined the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after a nine-year hiatus since 2015, expressed his excitement about meeting Gukesh, the youngest chess champion in the world.
Ashwin welcomed Gukesh with a handshake and gifted him a CSK jersey that had ‘Gukesh’ printed on the back. They subsequently played a game of chess, and afterward, Ashwin autographed the chessboard. The 18-year-old Gukesh was thrilled following his encounter with the renowned Indian off-spinner.

The official social media account of CSK shared a video featuring the caption, “World champion of chess! A true Chennai native! A friendly match with Ashwin! Presenting Chennai Superstars! Get ready to meet Gukesh and his passion for the city!”
In 2024, Gukesh achieved a significant milestone by becoming only the second Indian, following the renowned Viswanathan Anand, to secure the World Chess Championship title. He emerged victorious against China’s Ding Liren in an exciting championship match held in Singapore.
In January, Gukesh received the esteemed Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award from President Droupadi Murmu. He was among four athletes recognized with this honor, joining Manu Bhaker, Harmanpreet Singh, and Paralympian Praveen Kumar.
Ashwin has achieved a total of 180 wickets in the IPL across 212 matches, maintaining an economy rate of 7.12. Besides his time with CSK, he has also played for the former Rising Pune Supergiants, as well as Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals.
It is uncertain if Ashwin will be part of CSK’s roster for their first game against the Mumbai Indians, which is scheduled for Sunday, March 23, at Chepauk, under the captaincy of Ruturaj Gaikwad.
