Rohit Sharma given BIG warning by BCCI, selectors tell Indian captain…

The BCCI selectors have asked Rohit Sharma about his plans in international cricketer after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 this month.

Team India captain Rohit Sharma appears to be on borrowed time in international cricket. After a disastrous tour of Australia, where he scored only 31 runs in 3 Tests and had to bench himself for the fifth and final Test in Sydney last month, Rohit has managed to retain the captaincy of the ODI side till the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at least.
Ater leading the side to the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 final as well as the T20 World Cup 2024 title, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have put their faith in the Indian skipper to fire in Champions Trophy 2025. But according to a report in TOI newspaper, Rohit has already been asked by the BCCI selectors about his future plans after the Champions Trophy.
The report states that BCCI are keen to find a ‘stable’ captaincy option in Tests and ODIs. Rohit, who will turn 38 in April this year, will be 40 by the time the next ODI World Cup comes around in South Africa in 2027.
“The selectors and people in the board had this discussion with Rohit around the time of the last selection meeting. He has been told that he needs to decide how he wants to plan his future after the Champions Trophy. The team management has certain plans going into the next World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and the ODI World Cup. They want to ensure everyone is on the same page for a smoother transition,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by TOI.

Hardik Pandya in contention to become captain again
Shubman Gill has already been elevated to the position of vice-caption for the three-match ODI series against England starting in Nagpur on Thursday. The report also states that Mumbai Indian captain Hardik Pandya could be in contention to get back the captaincy of the team.
Hardik was the T20 captain of India before being replaced by his MI teammate Suryakumar Yadav. Jasprit Bumrah would have been the ideal choice to lead the side in Test cricket but his fitness makes him doubtful as a long-term option as well.
“Bumrah’s chances of a long Test series or completing a full season will always be in doubt. The selectors may want a more stable option. Gill has been seen as a captaincy prospect but his returns in Test cricket have been average. could also be a strong candidate and maybe someone like Yashashvi Jaiswal can be groomed for the role,” the BCCI source told TOI.
India will begin their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign in Dubai on February 20 with a clash against Bangladesh while the all-important India vs Pakistan match will take place on February 23 at the same venue.
