Sourav Ganguly backed MS Dhoni’s return as CSK skipper in IPL 2025 even before it became official, video goes viral

Before Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury sidelined him, Sourav Ganguly advocated for MS Dhoni to captain Chennai Super Kings; Dhoni subsequently assumed the captaincy.

New Delhi: Sourav Ganguly believes MS Dhoni’s influence on the Chennai Super Kings is significantly greater when he captains the team. Ganguly highlighted Dhoni’s exceptional leadership abilities, making this observation shortly before CSK confirmed Dhoni’s return as captain for the rest of the IPL 2025 season.
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s season-ending elbow injury necessitated a change in team leadership. He suffered a hairline fracture during a match against the Rajasthan Royals, but continued playing, scoring 63 runs before being ultimately ruled out following further games and medical evaluations.

“If MS Dhoni has to play for CSK, he must be captain of CSK. Because MS Dhoni, the captain, is a different beast,” said Ganguly.
MS Dhoni’s return to captaincy for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) coincides with a difficult period for the team, following four consecutive losses. This will be his first match as captain since leading CSK to their fifth IPL title in 2023.
“MS Dhoni can still get sixes. We saw that in the other game. Obviously, he’s 43 years old. We don’t expect to see the MS Dhoni what I saw in 2005. That’s quite natural. But I think he’s still got the power to clear and hit,” said Ganguly further.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have a chance to improve their performance when they play Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at home on Friday. This match offers a potential turning point under captain MS Dhoni’s guidance.
MS Dhoni has led the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 14 IPL seasons since the league began in 2008, with the exception of a two-year suspension. His captaincy has resulted in five IPL championships for CSK, most recently in 2023.
With MS Dhoni’s return as captain, Chennai Super Kings aim to revitalize their performance and improve their standings in the tournament as they face Kolkata Knight Riders. Both the team and its fans are optimistic about a turnaround in their fortunes.
