New Delhi: Ibrahim Zadran made history on Wednesday (February 26) during the crucial match between Afghanistan and England at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, scoring a brilliant century that helped Afghanistan post a competitive total. After Hasmatulah Shahidi won the toss and opted to bat first, Jofra Archer wreaked havoc on the Afghanistan top order, sending Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Sediqullah Atah, and Rahmat Shah back to the pavilion with single-digit scores. However, Zadran and Shahidi steadied the ship with a 103-run partnership.

Shahidi was dismissed for 40 runs off 67 balls, but Zadran continued to push the score forward. The 23-year-old brought up his century off just 106 balls.

Ibrahim Zadran Creates History:
With his century against England, Zadran made history, becoming the youngest player ever to score a century in both the Champions Trophy and the World Cup. He is also the first to achieve this milestone before turning 25. Zadran surpassed a record set by Rachin Ravindra just two days earlier against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi. Prior to Ravindra, the world record held by Sachin Tendulkar had stood for 17 years.

Zadran is the sixth youngest player to score a century in the history of the Champions Trophy, following in the footsteps of Shahirar Nafeez (2006), Upul Tharanga (2006), Mohammad Kaif (2002), Jacques Kallis (1998), and Dwayne Bravo (2006). He also holds the record as the fourth youngest player to score a century in an ODI World Cup, achieving this feat at the age of 21 years and 330 days against Australia during the 2023 World Cup at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.

Zadran is the third youngest cricketer to score multiple centuries in ICC ODI events, joining Upul Tharanga and Sachin Tendulkar. Tharanga, at 21, scored two centuries for Sri Lanka in the 2006 Champions Trophy, while Tendulkar, aged 22, achieved the same in the 1996 World Cup.

Additionally, Zadran became the first player from Afghanistan to score a century in the Champions Trophy. The 2025 edition marks Afghanistan’s first participation in the tournament, following their semi-final appearance in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Zadran also made history as the first Afghan cricketer to score a century in the ODI World Cup.

Zadran is only the second player, after Ben Duckett, to score a knock of 150+ in Champions Trophy history. Duckett’s 165 came in England’s defeat to Australia on February 22, while Zadran became the youngest ever to surpass the 150-run mark in the competition. His remarkable innings of 177 off 146 balls is also the highest individual score ever recorded in the Champions Trophy.

Afghanistan set an imposing total of 325, with Zadran breaking his own record for the highest individual score for his country in ODIs. The 23-year-old had previously scored 161 runs against Sri Lanka in Pallekele in 2022.
