Mohammad Rizwan’s Pakistan will face Temba Bavuma-led South Africa in a must-win clash in the ODI tri-series at the National Stadium in Karachi on Wednesday, February 12.
Hosts Pakistan are in a do-or-die ‘must-win’ clash against South Africa in a mini tri-series ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 which gets underway on February 19. Both Pakistan and South Africa have lost their opening match of the tri-series against New Zealand – who have easily booked their berth in Saturday’s final.
Mohammad Rizwan’s side lost to New Zealand by 78 runs after conceding 330 for 6 with all-rounder Glenn Phillips scoring his maiden ODI century. South Africa, on the other hand, posted an impressive 304 runs thanks to debutant Matthew Breetzke’s 150 but were trumped by Kane Williamson’s 14th ODI century.
Pakistan will miss the services of their premier pacer Haris Rauf, who has been advised rest after suffering from a muscular sprain in his lower chest wall in last week’s match against New Zealand. Left-arm pacer Akif Javed have been called up by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to replace Haris Rauf for the remaining tri-series games.
Saturday’s loss to New Zealand was Pakistan’s first defeat in the last five ODI matches while South Africa have not won a single match in their last five ODIs. South Africa will be boosted by the addition of Tony de Zorzi, Corbin Bosch and Kwena Mapheka – who are all part of ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad and are available for selection.
