Yashasvi Jaiswal sparks controversy after refusing to walk following umpire’s decision in India A vs England Lions clash

Jaiswal expressed his displeasure to the umpire over a controversial decision.

New Delhi: India A opener Yashasvi Jaiswal expressed dissatisfaction after being dismissed for 17 runs in the second unofficial Test against England Lions. Umpire’s decision to give him out leg before wicket (LBW) off a Chris Woakes delivery, despite Jaiswal’s apparent amusement at the call, ended his innings early.

During England Lions’ match against India, Yashasvi Jaiswal was stumped in the seventh over. After winning the toss and electing to field, England’s captain, James Rew, saw Jaiswal miss a full delivery, leading to his dismissal. Jaiswal initially disputed the umpire’s decision before eventually leaving the field. The Barmy Army subsequently commented on the incident.

In the first unofficial Test match at Canterbury, Jaiswal scored 24 and 64 runs. His opening partnership with KL Rahul in the upcoming first Test at Headingley, Leeds (starting June 20th), is now confirmed after both players batted together in the second unofficial Test. Rahul, absent from the first match, joined the team after obtaining permission from the BCCI and demonstrated promising form with three boundaries.

India’s upcoming cricket series will begin with a practice match between the India A team and the senior national team. This match follows the current game and serves as preparation for the series opener. Jaiswal and Rahul will be key players for India in this series, as they are expected to fill the void left by the retired Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The five-Test series presents a significant challenge for both players.

During India’s Australian tour, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s performance stood out, achieving the highest individual run total of 391, including a top score of 161. This was one of only three centuries scored by Indian batsmen on the tour. In contrast, KL Rahul is a seasoned campaigner in England, embarking on his third tour. His previous tours yielded 299 runs in 2018 (including a high score of 149) and 315 runs in 2021 (including a century at Lord’s).

KL Rahul’s performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was mixed; while he scored 276 runs, a relatively modest total compared to his potential, he outperformed many of his teammates, achieving two half-centuries. His return to the opening position generates significant expectation that he will bolster India’s batting against England’s less experienced pace bowlers.
